Newsletter for Booster Club Members and Patrons

Autumn 2018

Dear Members and Patrons,

Today, for the first time since the founding of the Association in 1995, we are sending a newsletter to our members. There are many reasons for this.

Due to a number of new projects, it was necessary to redefine the understanding of our association and to bring the administrative and communication processes up to date.

Regardless of the fact that members have the opportunity of using the University Sport Center facilities, we consider the annual member fee as a donation, which directly and fully benefits the student athletes. Therefore, members should also consider continuing their donations even if they are no longer participating in the university sports program.

We have set up a new Patron Membership, providing friends and supporters variety of donation opportunities they feel best suited.

With Sporting Regards,

Dr. Jochen Henzel and Philo Holland

Booster Club Goals and Tasks

Since the founding of our association in 1995, we have supported university sports as a reliable partner. We spare no effort when it comes to tackling upcoming problems or realizing projects that enrich the athletes competitiveness positively and sustainably. The Association supports students of the University of Würzburg, the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt and the Academy of Music in Würzburg that have qualified for participating in national and international championships. We provide sportswear and equipment. In addition we host foreign guests, catering for boating and sports events of all kinds are subsidized. Especially projects that can not be funded by public funds, but are important for a the good of the university sports environment.

Crowd Funding Project: Student Rowing Tradition

This is the largest project we have set out to achieve and we need your support for this crowdfunding campaign we're calling Student Rowing Tradition. This project has become so important because the wonderful and successful tradition of University student rowing since 1875 is endangered. The University's boathouse, built in 1951, is about to be demolished because it has suffered so much from flooding and other environmental influences that repair is pointless.

According to estimates made by a renowned architecture firm in Würzburg, a new building will cost approximately one million euros. As the University is not able to finance the new building due to the extensive amount of operationally-critical projects that are combined with cost-intensive construction measures, we see it as a great opportunity to raise the necessary funds through a regional, national and worldwide crowdfunding campaign.

The recipe for success of such a campaign is to reach as many people as possible, who are willing to further spread the news into their networks. Forwarding to many relatives, friends and acquaintances is more promising than just making a 10 Euro donation. When all of our 450 members activate their networks for this project, we can enable thousands of supporters.

After a long, thorough and time-consuming preparation phase, we will probably launch the fundraiser at the end of October. The exact date will be announced on our website. Then we will ask you all for support. We can now show that we are an association with goals and visions and not just an administrative institution for members who want to do sports.

Cooperation with University Alumni

A cooperation between the association and the Alumni Central of the University is also in the planning - Association Members can also become a member of Alumni Central at no extra cost. This sustains members solidarity with the University and takes advantage of the many offers provided by the Alumni program.

Associations' New Logo and Website

With the intent of improving both the communication and organization of the association, we have set up a completely new website where members can learn more about the organization and our projects: fv-sport-uni.org

New App for the University Sports Program

In cooperation with the University Sports Center, the Association has produced a Web App where one can view the entire sports program via mobile phone or computer with the following link: www.sport-uni.de. The App provides access to individual sports and an overview of the entire daily sports program. Furthermore, users can get all the information about the sports schedule and updates of any short-term changes directly on the phone.

Athletic Team Van

Over the past 15 years, the association has provided the University Sports Center three team vans. The comfortable Mercedes Vito, which is currently in use, was acquired four years ago through a cooperation with Xerox Franken. This van has been on the road bringing competitive teams from all types of sports to destinations throughout Europe saving the University the expense of a rental. In total, the three buses have covered more than 500,000 kilometers. Although the current van is in very good shape and has a powerful diesel engine, the current political situation in Germany may bring a change due to the environmental driving bans in large cities.

Donation Report 2018
In 2018 students were successfully involved in many competitive events at home and abroad, and once again proved that university sports play a major role in student life of the university. Special attention is given to the results at the European and World Championships. Qualifying for these event alone requires a considerable level of athletic performance. The University administration recognizes these achievements, because a successful sports program is also an advertisement for the attractiveness of the university.

The support of these successful athletes is of great concern to the Booster Club. Our donations this year were extensive: sportswear and equipment, travel and meal allowances, financing of events such as victory celebrations, boating, etc., provision of a Team Bus and much more. Here are the events and donations listed, which the Booster Club supported in 2018:
- The honoring of successful athletes
- Equipment of DHM swimming Team
- The women's futsal team (Indoor Football “Soccer”) as part of international contact in Eindhoven
- The celebration of the passing of sportsmen and women to the EUC in cooperation with the University
- The participants in the European University Championships in Portugal (football, futsal and rowing)
- The participants in the student world championships (golf, rowing and cycling)
- The women's football team at the DHM
- The provision of the club's own vehicle for various sporting events
